Several years ago the seemingly never ending quest for “Co-Parenting” sent our Texas legislature to task to come up with a plan to make possession of children of divorcing or divorced parents more equal. After spending many hours, days, and weeks debating, talking to experts, psychologists, psychiatrists, child advocates, and family therapists, the legislature emerged from behind closed doors, patting each other on the back. They had solved the problem of almost equal access by both parents. The monstrosity that became our current law was born- the dreaded Expanded Standard Visitation Order! And all you have to do for it to be successful is: 1- Be able to take off work to pick your child up Thursday after school; 2- Return them to school Friday mornings; 3- Pick them up again after school on Friday (if its your weekend); 4- Return them to school Monday morning. You get the idea. Noone bothered to consider that you either need to live in the same school district as your kids, or be prepared to get them up as early as 4:30 AM to fight traffic, or drive sometimes 40 miles so they can get to school on time. Noone gave a thought that maybe the homework assigned on Monday is supervised by one parent M-TH and a different parent on Friday. Finally, think how happy your children will be ping ponging between 2 households at least 2x every week. PURE GENIUS
